15 circular routes for children
15 Children’s circular routes
“NON GOGOA, HAN ZANGOA”
Where your thoughts go, your steps go (Basque proverb). Gorliz brings together throughout its municipality numerous opportunities to walk through unique places, some steeped in history, and enchanting landscapes that impress the hiker. The advantage of being a municipality facing the sea means that on some of the routes we can enjoy, not only walking among native and unique vegetation, but walking over vertiginous cliffs that fall almost vertically to the small coves bathed by the braving Cantabrian Sea.
A steep and winding coastline starting from the Gorliz and Astondo beaches adds to our coastal walks a special attraction with spectacular scenery. If we add to this the charms that treasure the neighboring municipalities we will go through this privileged area that is part of the so-called Uribe Kosta Bizkaina.

Children’s route 1
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:
Duration: 3 hours 16 min
Distance: 7,35 km
Cumulative elevation gain: 287m
Difficulty: Easy
This is perhaps one of the easiest routes to climb Ermua, with relatively little accumulated height gain (287 m) and a total distance of less than seven and a half kilometres, very suitable for walking with children. My intention on a day like today is to minimise exposure to direct sunlight and make the route as shady as possibl
Children’s route 2:
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:
Duration: 2 hours 2 min
Distance: 9,45 km
Cumulative elevation gain: 228m
Difficulty: Easy
This is a route that does not climb any of the peaks in the area. It is just over 9 km long and has a low positive difference in altitude (228 m), which runs along a road in several sections, although it is not very frequented by vehicles.
Children’s Route 3:
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE
Duration: 2 hours 49 min
Distance: 12,89 km
Cumulative elevation gain : 400m
Difficulty: Easy
Today three of us are going to the mountain: my daughter Ameth, my eldest granddaughter Nahiah, seven years old, and I. My daughter certainly will, but I doubt if the girl will endure the whole route, as it is relatively long and very similar to “Ruta 11 Gorliz”. The difference is that in this case we detour before Ermua and, through Fanobidea, we go down the cement track called Txoznako Estrata to Urezarantza and the sports centre, to return to the centre of Gorliz.
Children’s route 4
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE
Duration: 2 hours 32 min
Distance: 12,28 km
Cumulative elevation gain: 259m
Difficulty: Easy
This is a route of 12 km and 259 m of accumulated difference in altitude, which I consider relatively short and few climbs, very affordable to do with family and children. It also has some very interesting aesthetic attractions, being able to admire the bay of Gorliz in all its width from Barrika, an unusual image for most inhabitants of Gorliz.
Children’s route 5
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:
Duration: 2 hours 11 min
Distance: 8,46 km
Cumulative elevation gain: 307m
Difficulty: Easy
If we look at the circular routes published at www. visitgorliz. eus, we will see that Route 2 is the one I consider the most frequented ascent in the area, and so I titled it. It is a simple and short route, suitable for everyone, including families with children. Therefore, with some modifications, we recount it again and include it in this group of “Routes for families with children”.
Children’s route 6:
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:
Duration: 2 hours 3 min
Distanci 5,76 km
Cumulative elevation gain: 132 m
Difficulty: Easy
Simple route of almost 6 km and almost without slopes, to spend a couple of hours taking an interesting ride with the children.
Children’s Route 7:
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:
Duration: 2 hours 33 min
Distance: 11,53 km
Cumulative elevation gain: 262 m
Difficulty: Easy
Once again I have to do this simple tour on my own through the outlying areas of Gorliz and Plentzia, of which we have already covered some sections on other routes, but which together form an itinerary with its own personality very suitable for family with children. It has no ascents (we have accumulated only 262 m of ascent) although it is almost 12 km long.
Children’s Route 8
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:UTA:
Duration: 2 hours 29 min
Distance: 5,97 km
Cumulative elevation gain: 161 m
Difficulty: Easy
It is a short route, almost six kilometers long through places close to Gorliz, which includes a small stretch unknown to us and which connects (only on foot) two inexplicably disconnected areas of Gorliz, if not for this small, hidden and short trail. It is the connection between the Guzurmendi area and the entrance road to Gorliz, the BI 3154 in front of the old slaughterhouse.
Children’s route 9:
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:
Duration: 2 hours 29 min
Distance: 12,12 km
Cumulative elevation gain: 281 m
Difficuty: Easy
It is a route to do with the family somewhat longer than usual (12. 12 km), but practically without significant climbs. It is a route that has real natural charms and some curiosities that we will find along the way. Most of it is located in the municipalities of Plentzia and Barrika. Except for a beautiful stretch of forest, we will go on isolated roads with little traffic.
Children’s Route 10
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:
Duration: 2 hours 48 min
Distance: 12,5 km
Cumulative elevation gain: 394 m
Difficult: Easy
It’s too bad, I have to go this route again without any of my grandchildren. We are in the last days of August and Nahia and Telmo have had to leave already. And Pello’s still with his parents on vacation. It is a route of medium length, of twelve and a half kilometers, and of a discrete accumulated difference in altitude, of almost 400 m, but perfectly achievable at a family level with our kids since hard ascents are not made at any time.
Children’s Route 11
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:
Duration: 3 hours 21 min
Distance: 16,33 km
Cumulative elavation gain: 261 m
Difficulty: Easy
This is the longest route in this “Guide of 15 routes for families with children from Gorliz”, as it exceeds 16 km, although there are hardly any significant slopes. However, I think that a route of this length may not be suitable for very young children, being preferable that the boys or girls are already a little grown up to prevent us from failing in the adventure and not being able to walk to see the wonderful castle of Butrón. I think that from the age of six or seven, chivalry can make a route of this kind. It is a classic route where all sections of the road are beautiful and almost all of it runs along a stretch of the GR 280 (Great Route of Uribe Kosta)
Children’s Route 12
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:
Duration: 2 hours49 min
Distance: 13,42 km
Cumulative elevation gain acumulado: 436 m
Difficulty: Easy
Today is a very grey day and it threatens to rain. Even when I leave home it drizzles a drizzle, so I am forced to bring an umbrella and raincoat, which fortunately I have not had to use. I’m still waiting for my grandson Pello to come back from vacation with his parents and want to do with me one of the two or three routes I need to finish this Guide. Going with one of them puts me in front of the reality of what it really means to hike with children.
Children’s Route 13
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:
Duration : 2 hours and 10 min
Distance: 10,09 km
Cumulative elevation gain: 237 m
Difficulty: Easy
A similar route we have already made the opposite direction (See Route 6 of Gorliz for families with children), but this time we made it with some modification in reverse, which as I say always seems another route, returning to the village in this case by Orbeta bidea.
Children’s Route 14
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:
Duration : 2 hours and 37 min
Distance: 6,38 km
Cumulative elevation gain: 174 m
Difficulty: Easy
Today is a very cloudy day and it rained tonight, so I will surely find mud on some stretch of this new route that I intend to record and describe to thicken this “Guide to the 15 Gorliz Routes for Families with Children”. It is a simple walk in which we pass some section already treaded on other routes but with new ones, since the new sections always give the routes specificity and personality.
Children’s Route 15
Route published by Pedro Pablo Uriarte “15 circular routes from Gorliz for families with children”
FILE OF THE ROUTE:
Duration : 3 hours and 16 min
Distance: 7,49 km
Cumulative elevation gain: 123 m
Difficulty: Easy
This route, in fact a walk, is nothing more than a round of several peripheral roads of the urban center of Gorliz with the aim of making known some less frequented areas, coinciding in the walk with several swings, which my grandson Pello, four years old, who accompanies me today, has not hesitated to use all of them for a while. Hence the renaming of the route as “of the swings”. As always, we have started this route and started to register it on wikiloc in the Iberre area, but everyone can start it wherever they want and finish it wherever they want. The distance we traveled today my grandson and I do not reach seven and a half kilometers, affordable for everyone.
